Big day of field hockey proves successful for Forest Hills teams

Saturday brought with it lots of sunshine and hot temperatures on the new turf at Forest Hills Central High School, and the Forest Hills Field Hockey teams responded by turning up the heat on the competition.

Playing Ann Arbor Skyline for the first time since the two teams met in the 2013 Division II state championship, Forest Hills aimed to meet a preseason goal of knocking off one of the Ann Arbor-area powerhouse schools. Skyline had gotten off to a rocky start to the year, but was coming off a 6-0 dismantling of East Grand Rapids.

In the varsity match, Skyline started the scoring in the first half, finding an unmarked attacker on a crossing pass to the far goalpost to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Forest Hills defense turned away numerous scoring opportunities that would have allowed the Eagles to increase that lead, until the home team started to mount a counterattack. Earning a penalty corner in the second half, Forest Hills buried a one-time shot by FHC senior Madisyn Bunke to tie the game. Both teams continued to trade chances for the remaining time, but defenses held strong and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Earning a point in the game helped to keep Forest Hills among the top half of teams in the Division I standings, with an overall record of 5-3-1.

The junior varsity team posted a very strong showing against Skyline, showing a huge increase in confidence from the start of the season. FHE freshman Brooke Toigo notched the game's only goal, rocketing in a penalty corner shot from a difficult angle. Eastern sophomore Amber DeJonge recorded the shutout in Forest Hills' 1-0 victory. While it was their first victory on the field, the JV girls demonstrated that they will be a team to challenge all opponents for the remainder of the season.

With the high school games slated for the afternoon, the Forest Hills Field Hockey middle school program took advantage of the early field time to host Saline. With both clubs fielding two teams' worth of players, it gave the older girls a chance to compete on the turf, while offering the newer players a chance to develop. The Forest Hills 7th & 8th graders put in an impressive performance, beating Saline 2-0 without allowing a shot on goal.
